FOLLY 2021
PROJECT IMP ACT
In this design, I hope to highlight the
natural beauty of our environment and
bring awareness to the importance of
sustainability and conservation.
By magnifying things around such as
a seed pod or a piece of leaf that is
insignificant and minuscule, and scaling
it to a size large enough for people to
stop and observe, we can help people
appreciate nature and encourage them
to look after it.
May this be our “PAUSE” to truly
appreciate the beautiful and unique
natural world.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
-
Folly: folly is defined as an ornamental building with no practical purpose, especially a tower or mock-Gothic ruin built in a large garden or park.
The other definition of folly is having a lack of good sense, foolishness. In truth, the word useless and lacking good sense does not define all follies in fact it can help us to feel a certain way, empathise and understand a story and even gain awareness of certain issues in society and the natural environment
A Folly can also be a way to get people to ‘PAUSE’ to stop, look and listen to their surroundings.

FOLLY 2021
The final concept was inspired by a eucalyptus seed pod, the bushy yate (eucalyptus lehmannii)
The folly needed to be distinctive during the day and at night, and I was inspired by the case study of the Serpentine Pavilion, where the folly emits a soft warm light that attracts people during the evening like moths to the light.
The holes on the sides of the cone let sunlight penetrate through the interior of the folly, giving the impression that you are walking through a forest as beams of light reach the forest floor. Then at night, the inside of the cones is illuminated, creating a unique and mysterious glow.
